Key tenant protection bills need a big push!

Our just cause protections bill, HB 1236/Macri, is up for a vote in the House Housing, Human Services, and Veterans Committee this Friday! This is one of the most important times to contact your lawmakers, because they've heard the bill and some of the main arguments pro and con in testimony, but they REALLY need to hear from people in their district about why HB 1236 is so important.

Simultaneously, SB 5160 and SB 5139 also really need your help getting out of the Senate Housing and Local Government Committee. These bills provide important protections for renters as we begin the transition from the eviction moratorium to an economic recovery that centers housing stability.

We have already seen that powerful, well-resourced lobby groups are mobilizing to ensure evictions can start on April 1st, and we simply cannot let that happen. Please raise your voice this week to pass HB 1236, SB 5160 and SB 5139 out of committee!

Subject: Close the loophole and prevent homelessness. Vote yes on HB 1236.

Message:

I am asking you to vote yes on HB 1236. According to recently released 2020 Point in Time count data, Washington has seen a 6% overall increase in homelessness since 2019, and a 13% increase in unsheltered homelessness. Meanwhile, more than 175,000 people in our state are currently behind on rent. With so many at risk of eviction, can we afford to allow massive loopholes in our tenant protections to exist? I am counting on you to prevent an additional wave of homelessness in my community by enacting policies that promote housing stability for low-income households at risk of eviction. We need rental assistance to get tenants caught up and make sure landlords get paid, but EQUALLY important are policies that ease the transition from the eviction moratorium to a fully recovered economy in which renters have a fighting chance at long-term housing stability. We must establish a humane off-ramp, not a cliff. HB 1236/Macri establishes a common baseline of acceptable causes for eviction, closing harmful loopholes in our fair housing laws that have existed for decades. Just cause protections will ensure that no renter is forced out of their home for requesting an accommodation, for asserting their tenant rights, or simply because their landlord doesn’t like them. Just cause will ensure that no renter has to live in fear that their landlord will make them move with just 20-days' notice. Just cause will also ensure that we steward tax payer dollars responsibly. If we invest hundreds of millions of dollars in rental assistance without plugging the loophole, renters can still be evicted even after their landlord has received state rental assistance. The purpose of those dollars, after all, is to preserve housing stability for people. HB 1236 is an essential part of our off-ramp from the eviction moratorium and cannot be left out.
