It is not too soon to start contacting your state legislators about key housing and homelessness priorities for the 2021 legislative session; in fact, now is a critical time because lawmakers are currently clarifying their top-line budget priorities. We need to raise our voices now!
To prevent evictions and homelessness like we’ve never before seen in Washington, the legislature must respond with bold solutions to the immediate crisis we’re facing and with investments in the affordable homes we need for the long term. All along, our state's lack of affordable housing has led to people paying inordinate portions of their income on rent. Many people had been scraping by with tightened budgets, hoping their income remains stable. Then, COVID-19 led to hundreds of thousands of people in Washington falling behind on rent. The only sustainable way out of this crisis must include both significant rental assistance to catch renters up, AND long-term investment in affordable housing.
Please contact your state lawmakers today, urging them to fund rental assistance to ensure that whenever the eviction moratorium ends, the 170,000+ people currently behind on rent don’t lose their homes, and for a robust investment in the Housing Trust Fund to build the affordable homes our communities so desperately need.
