Advocates, organizers, housing and service providers, friends and allies: we need your voices again.
According to the Census Bureau's Pulse Survey, 247,959 renter households were unable to pay rent in June. Meanwhile, on August 1st at midnight, our state eviction moratorium will expire, leaving every single one of these households without protection from eviction. Black and Latinx households are many times more likely than white households to be at risk of eviction when the moratorium is lifted. We simply cannot sit by and watch this happen.
While our state is releasing $100 million for rental assistance soon, we know this is not nearly enough, and without the security that an eviction moratorium provides, many people will lose their homes, along with the safety and security that accompany a home.
It is clear that our legislature must weigh in with a longer term solution when they convene next session. Periodic extensions of the moratorium, while helpful in the near-term, are causing significant added trauma for struggling renter households. The sheer stress of hundreds of thousands of people worrying about whether they will become homeless during a pandemic is in itself detrimental to our collective resilience to this pandemic.
Join us in calling on Governor Inslee to extend the eviction moratorium through March 2021 to allow the Legislature time to vote on a longer-term solution to housing stability during COVID-19. Use the form to the right to send Gov. Inslee and your lawmakers an email today!
