Our community needs more permanently affordable homes. The severe lack of affordable homes touches all of us and is the reason our state is unable to prevent and end homelessness. Tenants struggle to compete for the very few affordable rentals available; people languish in emergency homeless shelters with no affordable homes to move into; disabled seniors can’t find rentals within the limits of their voucher assistance; families are paying so much in rent that they are forced to grapple with the impossible choice of paying the rent or foregoing other critical needs like childcare or medication.
So far, during week one of the 2022 legislative session, the Housing Alliance staff and advocates have been showing up to testify to ensure that the state's budget meets the need for bold investments in affordable housing. We are pleased to see that Governor Inslee recognizes this need, but we want to see further investments in preventing and addressing housing instability:
