Governor Inslee: Prioritize Housing and Homelessness in Washington's COVID-19 Response!
Advocates! Now is the time for us to speak up and request that the Governor prioritize housing security and the safety and health of people experiencing homelessness during the coronavirus pandemic. Read the full letter here and sign on!
We urge Gov. Inslee to take the following steps:
- Extend the eviction moratorium for another 90 days
**UPDATE** Gov. Inslee extended the moratorium for 60 days through August 1st!** - Prevent sweeps of homeless encampments during the emergency
- Swiftly invest CARES Act dollars into rental assistance and foreclosure prevention
- Formally ask Washington's federal delegation to prioritize funding for rental assistance and homelessness prevention
- Take advantage of FEMA reimbursements to stretch funds for homeless shelters and isolation and quarantine
- Establish a partnership between the state and hotel/motel chains to house people experiencing homelessness
- Ensure isolation and quarantine funds are available for families who are living in crowded homes and materials are available in multiple languages
- Direct 25% of the Education Relief Fund towards the educational needs of students experiencing homelessness or in foster care
- Ensure ongoing support so that no young person in Extended Foster Care ages out into homelessness during this pandemic
- Prevent state budget cuts for affordable housing, homelessness and safety net programs
- Convene a special session in a way that allows for policy to be considered
- Ensure that any funds that have been used to increase shelter capacity during COVID-19 are reimbursed from the Budget Stabilization Account
