ACTION: Call the Legislative Hotline and urge your state Senator to invest more deeply in housing stability and solutions to homelessness!
Both the House and Senate have released their proposed budgets. Both include an increase to the Aged, Blind and Disabled cash grant and funding to prevent evictions and foreclosures. The House proposal also includes $78 million for homelessness workforce retention and $55 million for rental assistance which is very much needed as many communities are already running out of federal funds.
Both capital budgets include significant investments in affordable homes, but the House goes further than the Senate and invests $521 million, including $100 million for the Housing Trust Fund.
Call the Legislative Hotline and ask the operator to deliver a message to your Senator asking them to match the House investments. Below are three sample scripts that you can personalize. Your message will be more powerful if you also add something about why this matters to you or how the affordable housing and homelessness crisis impacts your community.
Sample scripts:
#1. I am glad to see that the budget includes funding to address the affordable housing and homelessness crisis. Please make sure that the final Capital budget includes $521 million for affordable homes, including $100 million for the Housing Trust Fund. And that the Operating budget includes $78 million to support the frontline workers helping to end homelessness and $55 million for rent assistance. Everyone needs a safe, affordable place to call home and these investments will help make that possible.
